Nirvaana with Microsoft Copilot: a brain in Office, a body for school

The Nirvaana team · · 6 min read

The short answer

Microsoft Copilot is a brain that lives inside Windows and Microsoft's Office apps. It is right there when you write in Word, build slides in PowerPoint or work in Excel. What it does not carry is the rest of your school life: which Canvas deadline is next, the reading for Thursday, the notes you promised a friend.

Nirvaana is the body for that. It is one agent that keeps track of your classes, due dates and promises. It is not trying to be a better Copilot, and the two can sit on the same laptop.

One honest note up front. Nirvaana's help pages give setup steps for adding it to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Gemini. Copilot is not on that list today, so this post does not promise a direct connection. Today, the two work side by side, and we explain how below.

What "a body for the brain" means

An AI brain is smart, but it starts each chat knowing nothing about your week. A body gives it:

  • Your classes and deadlines. Connect Canvas and each class arrives with its files, its facts and every due date.
  • Memory. Tomorrow it still knows what you told it today.
  • Promises. What you owe and what you are owed, kept in view until it is done.
  • Hands. When you say yes, it can do things for you.

Copilot is a strong brain for documents. Nirvaana is the body that holds your life around them.

Who Microsoft Copilot is for

Copilot is for people who already work in Microsoft's world. Microsoft describes Copilot working inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and a Copilot app you can use on your phone or download to a computer.

On Windows, Copilot is a desktop app. You can open it from the taskbar icon, the Copilot key, or Windows key + C. At your direction it can search your files and look at what is on your screen to help. Microsoft says Copilot is free on Windows, and that extras such as higher usage limits and the AI inside Office apps need a Microsoft 365 plan with Copilot.

What Copilot is great at

  • Inside your documents. If you write papers in Word or build slides in PowerPoint, Copilot works in those apps. Nirvaana is not a document editor.
  • Built into Windows. It opens from the taskbar, the Copilot key or Windows key + C. Microsoft's page says you can download it from the Microsoft Store if it is not on your taskbar.
  • Seeing your screen. Copilot can look at what you have open when you ask it to. That is handy when you are stuck on a problem.
  • A free way in. Microsoft lists a limited free version of Copilot, subject to capacity and limits.
  • Storage and the Office suite. The paid Microsoft 365 plans bundle Copilot with the desktop apps and storage (1 TB on Personal, 2 TB on Family and Premium). On Family, Microsoft says Copilot is for the subscription owner only and is not shared with other family members.
  • Multi-step tasks. Microsoft describes Cowork as helping plan and complete multi-step tasks while you stay in control.

Student offers come and go, so check Microsoft's site, and ask your school what it already provides, before you pay for anything.

What Nirvaana adds

Your classes come in on their own. Connect Canvas and each class you take arrives with its files, its facts and every due date. Nirvaana only reads Canvas. The files are kept on your computer.

"Catch me up." Type it any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first.

Promises, both ways. Tell it what you promised, in your own words. It keeps each promise in view until it is done, and it remembers the ones people made to you. Today shows what you owe and what you are owed.

Worlds you can share carefully. A world is one part of your life with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.

Your own AI plan. Already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? Nirvaana does its heavy work on that plan, and each result says where it ran. Copilot is not one of those plans today. See Nirvaana with Claude.

Nirvaana runs on Mac now, and Windows and iPhone are coming soon. It is US-only for now, and sign-ups from the EU, EEA and UK go to a waitlist. You can find the downloads on the Nirvaana home page.

Working side by side

Today the hand-off is you, and it is a small one.

  • Write in Word with Copilot. Draft, tidy and ask questions inside the document.
  • Let Nirvaana hold your classes. Connect Canvas so the due dates and files are already there.
  • Start the day with "Catch me up." Then open Word for the paper that is due first.
  • Tell Nirvaana what you promised when you finish a study session, like sending your group the outline. It keeps that in view so you do not have to.

If you also use a chat assistant that Nirvaana can be added to, that assistant can see your world while you work. Nirvaana with ChatGPT shows how. Check Microsoft's site for whether Copilot can add outside apps, since that changes.

What stays private

We do not train on your world. We sell nothing and share nothing for advertising. Your own world is yours alone, and a shared world is shared only with its people. Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect. You can download your world or delete your account from Settings. See the privacy page. For Copilot, read Microsoft's own privacy statement.

Who should do what

  • Keep Copilot if you live in Word, Excel and PowerPoint and want help right inside them.
  • Add Nirvaana if the thing that slips is knowing what is due and what you promised.
  • Use both if you write in Microsoft's apps and want something else to keep your school life in order.
