If you or someone else may be hurt

Call for a person now. In the US and Canada, call or text 988, or call 911 if anyone is in danger right this minute. Elsewhere, your local emergency number. Nirvaana cannot make that call for you.

Nirvaana is an AI, not a person. It can be wrong, so check anything that matters. This page says what it does when it sees signs that someone may be hurt, and what it cannot do.

What Nirvaana does when it sees signs of crisis

Talk of dying, of not waking up, of being a burden; self-harm; pills or a plan; a threat against a real person; being hurt at home; a child at risk. When any of that appears, in any language, Nirvaana puts it ahead of everything else in the conversation, and keeps doing so in later messages until the danger has passed. When it may be your own life, its reply always has these parts.

  • The real numbers first. A person you can reach tonight, with the number itself, in the first lines, in your language: 988 in the US and Canada, and the lines above elsewhere. Never only “a crisis line in your area”.
  • It asks you directly. “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” and “Are you safe right now?” Asking does not put the idea there; it tells you that you can say it.
  • It stays. The reply ends on an open door, not on the referral. It is here, it is not going anywhere, and whenever you want to say more, it is listening.
  • It never gives method. Not a dose, an amount, a height or a place, however the question is put, and it says plainly that it will not, without scolding.
  • It does not argue or moralise. It will not tell you what your death would do to your family, call the thought wrong, or list reasons to live. It meets what you feel as pain.
  • If pills or the means are at hand, it asks whether you have taken any, asks you to put distance between yourself and them tonight, and asks you not to act tonight. If you say you only want to be heard, it hears you, and still asks.
  • If you say “don't just give me a hotline”, that changes how it offers help, never whether. It stays with you, and still names one person you could reach as well as it.
  • Someone hurting you at home: it believes you, gives the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and says how to reach out from a phone that person cannot see. A child at risk: it says the risk should be reported, and how. Someone else in danger from you: it says plainly, please don't do this, and helps with none of it.

What Nirvaana cannot do

Nirvaana cannot call anyone, alert anyone or report to anyone, and it will never say or imply that it has. No one at Nirvaana is alerted or watching when this happens. The only way help arrives is that you call: 911, or your local emergency number, or 988. That is the one thing it will ask of you again.

Nirvaana is not a crisis service, a doctor or a therapist. It is a way to think and remember, and in a crisis it is a bridge to the people whose work this is.

What stays private

What you tell it in a moment like this is yours. It is kept as your own, never proposed to a world you share with others, never repeated to another person, and never used as leverage. If someone is hurting you at home and it keeps what you told it, so it can stand with you later, it tells you that it kept it, that anyone who opens the app on your phone could see it, and that it will forget it the moment you ask. Ask, and it does.

Reaching a person at Nirvaana

Write to hello@nirvaana.ai. A person reads it, and answers. It is not a crisis line and it is not read around the clock, so for danger now, use the numbers above, not this address.

Why this page is here

California asks companies that offer AI companions to tell people plainly that they are talking to an AI, and to publish how they respond when someone speaks of suicide or self-harm, with referral to crisis services (Business and Professions Code sections 22601 to 22605, in force from 1 January 2026). This page is that published protocol. It describes what is built, and when it and the app disagree, the page is wrong and we will fix it.
