Nirvaana vs the Canvas Student app: which is better for students?

The Nirvaana team · · 5 min read

The short answer

These two are not rivals. The Canvas Student app is the official window into Canvas, the place your school runs your classes. Nirvaana is a place to keep everything, including what Canvas never sees.

If your whole life is inside Canvas, the app may be all you need. If you also juggle clubs, a job, friends, and things you promised people, Nirvaana covers the part Canvas can't. Many students will want both.

Who the Canvas Student app is for

Anyone whose school uses Canvas. It is made by Instructure, the company behind Canvas, and at the time of writing (October 2026) it is listed as free in the Apple App Store.

Instructure says its Canvas apps are on the App Store and Google Play, and that students can track upcoming deadlines, view grades, and keep track of to-do items with reminders and notifications. The App Store listing adds push notifications, widgets, messaging, class discussions, submitting files and media, quizzes, and downloading courses to use offline. Its update notes mention the app's Calendar and To-do screen.

Who Nirvaana is for

Nirvaana is for the student who has a lot to hold in their head. Canvas deadlines, the reading for Thursday, the notes you promised a friend. Nirvaana keeps track of all of it so your mind can rest.

It runs on Mac now, and Windows and iPhone are coming soon. It is made by Nirvaana AI, Inc., for people 18 and older, and is US-only for now.

Where the Canvas Student app is genuinely better

For anything that happens inside Canvas, the official app wins.

  • It is where you act. You can submit assignments, take quizzes, join discussions and message your instructors from the app. Nirvaana only reads Canvas. It never submits for you.
  • It is on your phone today. Nirvaana's iPhone app is coming soon. The Canvas Student app is already there, with push notifications and widgets.
  • Offline courses. The App Store listing mentions downloading full courses for use without internet.
  • It is your school's own view. Grades and feedback come straight from your instructors.
  • It is free. Per the App Store listing, at the time of writing.

One thing to know: the app's update notes say some features are available only where a school turns them on. Your school shapes what you see, so a friend at another school may see something a little different.

Where Nirvaana is different

Your classes, plus the rest

Connect Canvas and each class you take comes in on its own, with its files, its facts and every due date. Then Nirvaana adds what Canvas can't know about: your club meeting, your shift, the thing you said you'd do.

Promises, both ways

Tell Nirvaana what you promised, in your own words. It keeps each promise in view until it is done, and remembers the ones people made to you. Today shows what you owe and what you're owed. Canvas has no place for "I'll send you my notes Friday."

A morning catch-up

Type "Catch me up" any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first.

Worlds you can share without oversharing

A world is one part of your life with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.

Notes that stay with you

Your notes and files live on your own computer, in a Brain you can search. Files from Canvas are kept on your computer. Nirvaana only reads Canvas, so it can't change anything there.

Using both together

This is the setup we'd suggest.

  1. Keep the Canvas Student app on your phone for submitting work, taking quizzes and watching for grade changes.
  2. Connect Canvas to Nirvaana on your computer so every class and due date comes in without copying anything by hand.
  3. Each morning, type "Catch me up." Let Nirvaana tell you what is due and what is late.
  4. Tell Nirvaana the promises that live outside Canvas: the group chat, the club, the job.
  5. Do the actual work in Canvas. Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect, so look before you press.

What stays private

Your own world is yours alone. We do not train on your world, and we sell nothing and share nothing for advertising. A shared world is shared only with its people. You can download your world or delete your account from Settings. Read more on the privacy page.

Who should pick which

  • Just the Canvas Student app: your life is mostly classes, and you are happy checking Canvas for deadlines.
  • Nirvaana too: you have commitments outside Canvas, you forget promises, or you want one calm place that gathers it all.
  • Both: most students who use Canvas heavily. The app is where you do the work, and Nirvaana is where you set the worry down.

If you want the second half, there is a download on the Nirvaana home page. For more on staying on top of due dates, see how to stop forgetting assignments.

Set it down. Nirvaana keeps track of your classes, your promises and your week, so your mind can rest.
