Nirvaana vs Notion: which is better for students?

The Nirvaana team · · 5 min read

The short answer

Notion is a workspace you build. Nirvaana is an assistant that keeps track of things for you. They do different jobs, and plenty of students are happiest using both.

If you love designing your own pages, databases and planners, Notion is wonderful at that. If what you want is for your classes, due dates and promises to be kept in view without you building and tending a system, Nirvaana is the closer fit.

Who Notion is for

Notion is for people who like to shape their own setup. You get pages, databases, boards, calendars and docs, and you decide how they fit together.

For students, that can mean a class notes hub, a reading tracker, a project board for a group assignment, or a personal wiki you keep for years.

A few things worth knowing, all checked on Notion's own pages at the time of writing (October 2026):

  • Notion has a Free plan, a Plus plan at $10 per member per month, and a Business plan at $20 per member per month (monthly billing; Notion says yearly billing saves up to 20%).
  • Students and educators at accredited colleges and universities can get a free Education Plan for a one-member workspace, using a school email. You verify the school email once a year. Check Notion's education page for the current details.
  • Notion's marketplace lists thousands of community-made templates, with categories like Student Life, Student Planner and Study Planner.

Who Nirvaana is for

Nirvaana is for the student who has too many things in too many places. Canvas deadlines, the reading for Thursday, the notes you promised a friend.

You tell it things in your own words, the way you would text a friend. Tomorrow it still knows. It is one assistant for one person, and the idea is simple: set it down, and let your mind rest.

It runs on Mac now. Windows and iPhone versions are coming soon.

Where Notion is genuinely better

  • Building things. Databases, custom views, forms, sites, boards. If you want a planner that looks exactly how you imagine it, Notion gives you the tools.
  • Templates. There is a huge community library. You can start from someone else's study planner instead of a blank page.
  • A calendar of its own. Notion Calendar connects to Google Calendar, Outlook calendars and iCloud-synced calendars, and it can show Notion database deadlines next to your events. It is free to get, and it runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
  • Teams and collaboration. Shared workspaces, guests and shared docs are what Notion is built around. Its Free plan allows 10 external guests, and the Education Plan allows up to 100.
  • A free education option. If you are eligible, a free student workspace is hard to beat for cost.
  • Mobile apps today. Notion is on phones now. Nirvaana's iPhone app is still coming.

Where Nirvaana is different

Your classes come in on their own

Connect Canvas and each class you take arrives with its files, its facts and every due date. Nirvaana only reads Canvas.

Notion, as far as we could find, does not have an official Canvas connector listed on its own pages. Students who want Canvas in Notion usually use third-party tools or automation services. If you like tinkering, that works. If you do not, it takes some setup.

Promises, both ways

Tell Nirvaana what you promised, and it keeps each promise in view until it is done. It also remembers the promises people made to you. Your Today view shows what you owe and what you are owed.

Type "Catch me up" any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first.

Worlds you share without oversharing

A world is one part of your life, with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.

Nothing goes out without your yes

Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect, so keep an eye on anything important.

Your notes stay on your computer

Your notes and files are kept on your computer, in a Brain you can search. Notebooks let you mix Python and writing on one page, and you can open any notebook in VS Code when you want.

Helpers

Helpers are launching, and not live everywhere yet. Each helper has one job: one keeps promises in view, one plans meetings, one teaches from your classes. They work while you are away and leave what they found for the morning. You approve what matters, and spending money always asks first.

Using both together

They fit together well.

  1. Keep your long-term notes, class wikis and project boards in Notion, where you can shape them.
  2. Connect Canvas to Nirvaana, so due dates and the "Catch me up" each morning never depend on you copying anything over.
  3. Tell Nirvaana what you promised in a group project, then use the Notion board for the shared plan.
  4. Use Notion Calendar for the picture of your week, and Nirvaana for what you owe and what you are owed.

Neither one has to replace the other.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Notion if you enjoy building your system, want templates, work in shared pages, or qualify for the free Education Plan and want a flexible home for notes.
  • Pick Nirvaana if you would rather not build or maintain anything, you want Canvas deadlines and promises kept in view, and you like talking to something that remembers.
  • Pick both if you want a beautiful workspace and an assistant that handles the remembering.

You can download Nirvaana and try it next to the workspace you already have. For more options, see our guide to the best AI study tools in 2026.

Set it down. Nirvaana keeps track of your classes, your promises and your week, so your mind can rest.
