Nirvaana vs Obsidian: which is better for students?

The Nirvaana team · · 4 min read

The short answer

Obsidian and Nirvaana do different jobs. Obsidian is a notebook: you write, link and organize notes in files you own. Nirvaana is more like a quiet assistant that keeps track of your deadlines and promises so you don't have to.

If you love building your own note system, Obsidian is wonderful and free. If your problem is "what is due, and what did I promise?", Nirvaana is built for that. They also work side by side.

Who Obsidian is for

Students who like to write and link ideas, and who enjoy shaping their tools. Obsidian's own site says it stores your notes locally as plain text Markdown files, on your device, and that you can use them offline. It also says there are thousands of plugins and themes to fit your way of thinking.

Because the notes are plain files, you aren't locked in. You can open them in other apps.

Who Nirvaana is for

Students with a lot to hold in their head. Canvas deadlines, the reading for Thursday, the notes you promised a friend. Nirvaana keeps track of all of it so your mind can rest.

It runs on Mac now. Windows and iPhone are coming soon. It's made by Nirvaana AI, Inc., for people 18 and older, and is US-only for now.

Where Obsidian is genuinely better

  • Writing and linking notes. That is the whole point of Obsidian, and it is excellent at it. Nirvaana is not trying to be your note-taking home.
  • Plugins and themes. Obsidian lists thousands of them. You can build the exact system you want.
  • Plain Markdown files you fully own. Open them anywhere, keep them forever.
  • Free. At the time of writing (October 2026), Obsidian's site says the app is free without limits, and the license page says it is free for all purposes, including commercial use.
  • Optional paid add-ons, with a student discount. Sync is $4 a month billed yearly ($5 billed monthly). Publish is $8 per site per month billed yearly ($10 monthly). Obsidian's pricing page lists 40% off Sync and Publish for students, teachers and nonprofit staff. Check their site for current pricing.
  • Commercial license is optional. It is $50 per user per year, and Obsidian says you are not required to pay for it. It is a way to support the app.

Where Nirvaana is different

Classes come in on their own

Connect Canvas and each class you take comes in on its own, with its files, its facts and every due date. In Obsidian you would build that yourself or find a plugin. Nirvaana only reads Canvas.

A morning catch-up

Type "Catch me up" any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first.

Promises, both ways

Tell Nirvaana what you promised, in your own words. It keeps each promise in view until done, and remembers the ones people made to you. Today shows what you owe and what you're owed.

Worlds you share on purpose

A world is one part of your life with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.

Your notes and files on your computer

Nirvaana's Brain holds your notes and files on this computer, as a map you can search. Notebooks (on by default) put Python and writing on one page, run on your own computer. You can open any notebook in VS Code, and it writes a standard .ipynb file.

Your own AI plan

Already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? Nirvaana does its heavy work on that plan, and each result says where it ran. One Approve adds Nirvaana to Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Gemini so they know your world too.

A plain comparison

What matters to a student Obsidian Nirvaana
Main job Writing and linking notes Keeping deadlines and promises in view

Canvas classes and due dates Not built in; check their plugin list Connect Canvas; each class comes in on its own
Promises you made and were made to you Not built in Yes
Customizing Thousands of plugins and themes Not a plugin system
Sharing Sync and Publish add-ons Worlds, shared only with their people after you press Approve
Price (October 2026) App free; Sync from $4/month yearly; Publish from $8/site/month yearly Not listed here yet

Using both together

  1. Keep writing your long notes and study maps in Obsidian. It is great at that.
  2. Connect Canvas to Nirvaana so every class and due date shows up without typing.
  3. Each morning, type "Catch me up" to see what is due and what is late.
  4. When you promise someone a set of notes from Obsidian, tell Nirvaana. It keeps that promise in view until you've done it.
  5. Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect, so look before you press.

What stays private

Your own world is yours alone. We do not train on your world, and we sell nothing and share nothing for advertising. A shared world is shared only with its people. You can download your world or delete your account from Settings. See the privacy page.
