Nirvaana vs Motion: which is better for planning your week?

The Nirvaana team · · 4 min read

The short answer

They solve different problems. Motion is built to put your tasks on your calendar and keep rearranging them as your day changes. Nirvaana is built to keep track of what is due and what you promised, so your mind can rest.

If your week is a pile of work tasks that need time blocks, look hard at Motion. If your worry is "what am I forgetting from my classes and the people in my life?", Nirvaana is closer to that.

Who Motion is for

Motion describes itself as an AI powered app for work. It brings tasks, projects, a calendar, meeting notes and docs into one place. Its site lists individuals and teams of many kinds, from agencies and law firms to startups and sales teams.

The headline feature is auto-scheduling. You add tasks with priorities, deadlines and how long they take. Motion places them on your calendar and, according to its site, updates the schedule automatically as things change. It can combine work and personal calendars, including Google, Outlook and iCloud.

Motion has also added an AI notetaker for meetings and a docs assistant. It is a big workspace, mostly aimed at people who run projects.

Who Nirvaana is for

Nirvaana is for someone whose life has a lot of loose ends. Canvas deadlines, the reading for Thursday, the notes you promised a friend. It keeps track of all of it so you can set it down.

It works well for students, and for anyone who makes and receives a lot of small promises. Nirvaana is made for one person and talks like texting someone. Tomorrow, it still knows.

Where Motion is genuinely better

  • Time blocking. Motion places tasks into open slots on your calendar and moves them when plans shift. Nirvaana does not build your calendar for you.
  • Project and team work. Motion has projects and, on its Business plan, team capacity planning, dashboards, Gantt charts and time tracking. Nirvaana is not a project management tool.
  • Meeting notes. Motion's site describes an AI notetaker that turns action items into tasks.
  • Mobile and desktop apps. Motion's pricing page lists iOS, Android and desktop apps. Nirvaana is on Mac now, with Windows and iPhone coming soon.

If you want an assistant that decides when you will do each task, that is Motion's strength.

Where Nirvaana is different

Classes come in from Canvas

Connect Canvas and each class you take comes in on its own, with its files, its facts and every due date. Nirvaana only reads Canvas. Say "Catch me up" any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first.

Promises, both ways

Tell Nirvaana what you promised, in your own words. It keeps each promise in view until it is done. It also remembers the ones people made to you. Today shows what you owe and what you are owed.

Worlds you can share without oversharing

A world is one part of your life with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.

Nothing outward without your yes

Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect, so keep an eye on important things.

Your notes, on your computer

Your notes and files live on this computer, and you can search them. Notebooks let you write and run Python on one page, on your own computer.

Helpers

Helpers are launching but may not be live everywhere yet. Each helper has one job: one keeps promises in view, one plans meetings, one teaches from your classes. They work while you are away and leave what they found for the morning. You approve what matters, and spending money always asks.

Using both together

They do not fight each other. A simple setup:

  1. Use Nirvaana in the morning. Type "Catch me up" and see what is due and what you owe people.
  2. Move the real work into Motion, where it can find time on your calendar.
  3. Let Nirvaana remember the promises and class facts that do not belong on a calendar, like "send Priya my notes."

You get a planner for your hours and a memory for your commitments.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Motion if you manage projects, run a team, or want your tasks time-blocked for you.
  • Pick Nirvaana if your stress is forgetting classes, deadlines and promises, and you want one place that keeps track.
  • Use both if you want your week scheduled and your loose ends remembered.
