Moving your Slack in

Bring your team's Slack into Nirvaana without starting from nothing. Upload the export Slack gives you, choose the channels, and each one becomes a world with what was decided, promised and asked there, ready for you to check first.

Nothing is made, and nobody is added, until you press the button for it.

First, the export from Slack

A workspace owner or admin downloads the export in Slack (Workspace settings, then Import/Export Data). Every plan exports public channels; the free plan covers the last 90 days. Private channels and direct messages are only in an export on Business+ or Enterprise Grid, and only with Slack's approval.

Slack emails a link to a ZIP file. Download it, and keep it as it came: don't open or change it.

In the Mac or Windows app, you can drop that ZIP file straight on the window, or on Your worlds, and press “Import”. It uploads (you can pause it and carry on later, up to 5 GB) and reads it, then “Choose channels” takes you to the steps below.

Bringing it in

  1. Open your worlds, press “Start from what you already have”, then “Import from Slack”. The same button is under a world's connectors (its “Settings” tab, then “Open connectors”).Move my Slack in
  2. “Choose the export”, then “Upload and read it”. A big export takes a minute or two, and you can leave the page while it reads.
  3. Choose how the channels come in. “One world for the workspace” is chosen to begin with: a channel worth it becomes a moon of that world, and the rest go into the world itself. Or “Each channel its own world”, five at most.
  4. Nothing is ticked: tick the channels to bring in. Each shows how many messages it has, from how many people, over what days. A channel with three people or more talking in it, on many days this month, says why it is “Suggested as a world”: at most five are.
  5. When it is read, press “Review its draft” on a channel. Tick what's right, change what isn't, and make its world.
  6. The world's people are listed after, each with an Invite button. Invite the ones you want; nobody is added for you.

What stays out

  • Direct messages and group DMs stay out: they were between people, not for a world, so they are never brought in.
  • A private channel is only brought in once you say that everyone in its world may read it, including people who weren't in the channel.
  • If invite emails go out for an import, each one names nobody: not who invited them and not the workspace, only that they were invited to Nirvaana. They see who invited them once they sign up with that address.
  • One import takes an export of up to 200 MB. For a bigger workspace, export a shorter date range in Slack.
  • The export itself is let go once it is read, and an import you don't finish clears itself after seven days. “Discard this import” clears it sooner; worlds already made stay.

If it isn't there

If the page says “This isn’t open for your account yet.”, Slack import hasn't reached you. You can still make a world and tell it things yourself, or paste a group chat or notes with “Start from what you already have” where you see it.
