Nirvaana vs Todoist: which is better for students?
The short answer
Todoist is a fast, polished to-do app, and if you like building your own lists, you will probably enjoy it. Nirvaana is a different kind of tool: it connects to Canvas, brings in each class, and keeps your promises in view so you do not have to type everything in.
If you want a sharp task list that you control, pick Todoist. If you want the deadlines and promises gathered for you, try Nirvaana. Plenty of students will want both.
Who Todoist is for
Todoist is for people who like to capture a task fast and sort it into projects. You type a sentence, it understands the date, and the task lands where it belongs.
Todoist's help page says Quick Add reads natural-language dates and times typed into the task name. Its examples include "tomorrow at 4 PM" and "every other Tuesday starting March 3." You can also set deadlines with braces and reminders with an exclamation mark.
It is a good fit if you already think in lists, filters and labels, or if you work on a team project and want a shared space.
Who Nirvaana is for
Nirvaana is for the student whose problem is not the list, it is the remembering. The Canvas deadline you saw once. The reading for Thursday. The thing you told a friend you would send.
You talk to it like texting someone, and tomorrow it still knows. It runs on Mac now, and Windows and iPhone are coming soon.
Where Todoist is genuinely better
- A polished task list. Projects, filters, labels, board layouts and list layouts are what Todoist is built for. Nirvaana is a conversation, not a task manager.
- Quick capture with dates. Typing "tomorrow at 4 PM" and having it understood is quick and satisfying.
- Integrations. Todoist's pricing page cites 90+ integrations and an integrations directory. That is a wide reach.
- Teams. The Business plan adds a shared workspace, team folders, roles and permissions. If you run a student org with a formal task system, that is real structure.
- AI features inside the app. Todoist lists features such as Filter Assist, Task Assist (on Pro), Email Assist and Ramble, which has limited sessions on the free plan and unlimited on Pro and Business. Check their site to see exactly what each does today.
- A free plan. At the time of writing (October 2026), the free plan is called Beginner and includes 5 personal projects, 3 filter views and one week of activity history, according to Todoist's pricing page. Pro costs $7 per month, or $60 per year, and Business costs $10 per user per month, or $8 per user per month billed yearly. We did not find a student discount in Todoist's pricing pages, so check their site for current offers.
Where Nirvaana is different
Classes come in from Canvas
Connect Canvas and each class you take comes in on its own, with its files, its facts and every due date. Nirvaana only reads Canvas. Files are kept on your computer, under ~/Nirvaana/files/school.
In a to-do app, you type each assignment yourself or set up a link on your own. Here, the work is done for you.
"Catch me up"
Type "Catch me up" any morning and it tells you what is due, the late things first. You do not open five tabs or scroll a list to see what slipped.
Promises, both ways
Tell Nirvaana what you promised, in your own words. It keeps each promise in view until it is done, and remembers the ones people made to you. Today shows what you owe and what you are owed.
A task list can hold a promise if you type it as a task. Nirvaana is made to catch the promise in the way you would say it to a friend.
Worlds you can share without oversharing
A world is one part of your life with the people in it: a class, a club, a team. Your own world is yours alone. Nothing from it goes into a shared world until you press Approve.
Your own AI plan, Brain and Notebooks
Already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? Nirvaana does its heavy work on that plan, and each result says where it ran. Brain keeps your notes and files on your computer, searchable. Notebooks let you write and run Python on one page, and you can open any notebook in VS Code when you want.
Nirvaana is built to stop before it sends, posts, pays, signs or deletes, and hand it to you. The check is automatic and not perfect.

Using both together
Todoist stays your list for things you want to own and sort: errands, a side project, a packing list. Nirvaana handles school. Start your morning with "Catch me up," then move the one or two things you want to see all day into Todoist if that helps.
When a friend asks for something, tell Nirvaana the promise. When you want it as a repeating task, add it to Todoist with a date. They do not need to know about each other.
Who should pick which
- Pick Todoist if you enjoy list-making, want powerful filters, or work in a team that needs a shared task system.
- Pick Nirvaana if you want your classes, deadlines and promises gathered for you, and you would rather talk than organize.
- Use both if you want a tidy personal list and something that keeps track of school.
